There are several studies and articles on how series books help students with literacy through a predictible format that provides the student with reading success through the acquisition of vocabulary found within each "formula book." Stephen Krashen has even done research on the use of the "Sweet Valley High" books with ESL adult learners who read through the entire series of books and became stronger, more independent readers who later chose other books once they had developed the confidence for reading. Here's the article: http://www.sdkrashen.com/articles/narrow/all.html (be sure to check the references listed in this article for the actual studies done) You can locate Stephen Krashen's website and studies here: http://www.sdkrashen.com/ There is also a mention of it in the 2006 SLJ: http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA6367048.html Good luck! ~Shonda -- Shonda Brisco Assistant Professor / Curriculum Materials Librarian Mary L.
