Dear LM_Netters: Our next AASL-ISTE SIGMS virtual learning community meeting will be on Thursday, March 19th at 8pm ET/7pm CT/6pm MT/5pm PT in Second Life. This month’s guest facilitator is Jon Mueller. Jon is the author of the book *“Assessing Critical Skills”* (Linworth Publishing) and is a nationally-recognized expert in skill development and assessment. This meeting will focus on developing strategies, guidelines, and examples to help students improve critical skills. Building on implementation of the new AASL standards, attendees will discuss how to effectively assess students’ critical skills. About Jon’s book - Reading this well-researched, practical book on assessing critical skills and applying the author’s strategies will allow the library media specialist to not only teach the standards but to also teach students to improve their critical skills. · Learn the process and value of designing assessment that matches the critical skills being taught in order to improve student performance. · Find a clear blueprint for the strategies, guidelines, and examples the LMS will need to immediately help students improve critical skills. · Understand the importance of teaching and assessing essential skills and their connection to significantly improved student achievement.
