Recently, our school district enjoyed a wonderful, week-long visit with Debra Frasier, author and illustrator of many outstanding children's books including On the Day You Were Born, Miss Alaineous: A Vocabulary Disaster, and The Incredible Water Show. Debra was a hit with students, parents and teachers alike. She spent a day in each of our four elementary schools, spoke at a public library and led two lively district-wide evening events in which she demonstrated her cut-paper illustration technique and helped nearly 350 children and parents make their own illustrations with paper, scissors and glue. Debra has that rare ability to touch and connect with every member of her audience. Her presentation style, colorful slides, humor, warmth, love of words and boundless talent and creativity are nothing short of inspiring. She serves as an excellent role model for children - a person pursuing her passions creatively and successfully in life. Debra encourages students to ask questions and answers each child thoughtfully. We were so impressed that each of Debra's presentations covers a different book and is geared to that particular grade-level. Teachers loved Debra's before-school mini workshops in which she shares tips about building student vocabulary and provides pointers about putting on a vocabulary parade where students dress up as words! To find out more about Debra, her books, her projects, school presentations, and to view photos of vocabulary parades around the country, visit her award-winning Web site at www.debrafrasier.com. Clearly, she is an author who is deeply committed to literacy and education. One of our principals wrote, "What a wonderful visit we had with Debra. The teachers raved about her sessions with the children. ... I know it will last as a memorable school experience for our little ones." In my book, Debra Frasier is an ideal visiting author.
