Hello. Our middle school is having mandatory summer reading for the first time this summer. Each student will be required to read one book from a list. I know other districts do this. We are coming up with a way or ways to assess the students' reading in Sept. when school starts. We don't want the students to write long essays because the English teachers with my help will be looking at all of them. In the past the students could illustrate part of the book or write a synopsis of the story, but our principal wants the students to write. If your district has summer reading, how do you handle this? Thank you.
