I wish I could claim credit for this, but it came from one of my students.
As I suggested that he talk more quietly to the people at his table, he
said, "you mean we should use a 6 inch voice."
Puzzled, I asked what that meant.
His response was brilliant [IMHO].  "It means that you can only hear me if
you are 6 inches away."

Since I work in a high school, and teenagers know EVERYTHING that is worth
knowing [AHEM], when I walk around the room and approach a table that is too
loud, I ask them if they know what a 6 inch voice is.  They have no idea,
but they quickly get my point.

Maybe this will work for you, too.
