Hi,
Regarding my OFF TOPIC request for suggestions on where to stay when visiting NYC,
I received many immediate replies. I appreciate every one of them. There were also
requests for sharing, so below is an imperfect summary of sorts. All suggested
locations had positive attributes which I did not for the most part include in this
post.

Strategy seemed to be as common a suggestion as specific place. By that I mean I
was encouraged to use services like Priceline.com, tripadvisor.com, etc. At the
bottom is a detailed reply I received on this you may find helpful.

I'd recommend looking at www.biddingfortravel.com. This website will give you
some idea of hotels available for bidding on Priceline, which is most likely the
only way you'd get a room within your budget. When you get to the website, scroll
down to "USA Hotels", then click on "NY State-NY City hotels". Look at the second
post, "NYC Hotels list". This will give you an idea of what hotels to bid on, and
which part of town to specify. Then go back and look at the recent bids--people
post what they were bidding for, and what their rate was. There are many recent
bids in the $95-$120 range for midtown. Granted, these bookings are for April and
May, and I know June will be a little higher, but I think you'd still be able to
get something in your price range. I'm sure you're already aware that Priceline
bidding doesn't allow you to pick a specific hotel, and that your bid is
nonrefundable.

Since there will only be two of you in the room, you shouldn't have any problem if
you stick to above three star hotels. Spend some time reading all the reviews
before you make any bids. My family goes to NY at least once a year to visit
family, but my husband is in the hotel business, so we get employee rates. We've
been very happy with the Westin Times Square, the Sheraton New York Towers, the W
Times Square, and the Sheraton Four Points Chelsea, all of which appear regularly
on priceline's bidding list. Before my husband worked for this hotel chain, I used
Priceline many times, and have never had a problem. My only caveat is to stick to
three stars and above--there are some rather dumpy hotels from 2.5 stars and down.

Whatever hotel you book, take a look at www.hopstop.com for information on how to
get around on the subway and buses. You can map out some of the places you plan on
visiting to see how much time you need to budget for traveling.

My husband and I highly recommend the Seafarers and International House,
which is located in Union Square (south of midtown but not by far, and close
to several subway lines) -- also very close to Strand Books, the best
bookstore around! The website is at
http://www.sihnyc.org/newyork-guesthouse.php and they have rooms with
attached bathroom in the range you are looking for (and less with shared
bathrooms in the hall). Safe, friendly, and inexpensive.
