I'm new to K-8 (after 20 years in high schools, colleges, and medical schools) and
do a lot of read alouds to the early childhood classes and my multiply handicapped
students.

I knew the more popular Dr. Seuss books from childhood (Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs
and Ham), but I have just discovered his many other treasures such as:

The Butter Battle Book,

Bartholomew and the Oobleck

Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are

On Beyond Zebra

and Happy Birthday to You!

I am finding them SO RICH in language, rhythm and MEANING, that I am having trouble
appreciating anything else.

I am looking for some other treasures to be steered towards.

My brand new library came with at least 1500 picture books and I am planning to
read them all, and have already started to, but NOTHING has grabbed me the way Dr.
Seuss has.

I know Dr. Seuss is probably a cliche at this point, but his books are that good
that nothing else compares.

Any suggestions for other authors that will help me break up with Dr. Seuss and
move on?

"Ten guards and the warden couldn't have torn me out of those books. Months passed
without even thinking about being imprisoned....I had never been so truly free in

"Some kids go to the library ... Others to the street. But they can't go to the
libraries if the libraries are closed." - Officer Dombranski, NYPD

"The best morals kids get from any book is just the capacity to empathize with
other people, to care about the characters and their feelings. So you don’t have to
write a preachy book to do that. You just have to make it a fun book with
characters they care about, and they will become better people as a result." -
