Original post: I am working with the 5th grade science teacher on researching the planets. We wanted the final outcome to be more than reguritating facts. We want a project that helps them really see and feel the differences in the planets and get some good critical thinking in. I had thought about having them make a list of what to wear and pack if they were going to visit the planet, but was hoping for something more inspiring. Responses: have had a class figure the distance between planets then space out on a track a fraction of that distance have couple of people be the sun, another few be each planet out from the sun Along the same lines, they could explain what adaptations they would need to visit the planet. Another idea would be to create a travel advertisement for the planet. In many cases, that could also count as a creative writing exercise! <grin> Our 4th grade made travel brochures to advertise their planets. They used Pagemaker to design a multi-panel color brochure. If that program is not available at your school, students could draw by hand, or make a poster. Our students were given guidelines about material that needed to be included, but there was a lot of creativity involved, and they enjoyed the project. Well, don't stop at just what to wear. Plan an entire vacation. How would you get there, how long would it take. What would you pack to wear. What would you do on the planet. Each planet has different characteristics, so you'd have to know that to plan what to do. Would you need any special equipment. This could be a very fun project! Our seventh graders make models of the planets to hang up in the school lobby.
