Dear wise ones,
I just had a woman call me to say she went to my school 25 years ago (middle
school), and is looking for a book that we had that she wants her daughter to read.
She remembers the exact shelf it was on, but not the title or author. I had to tell
her that things had changed a lot in 25 years. (She was a little dismayed.) She
told me a little of the plot. It goes like this:
The main character is an African-American girl. The book opens with the mother
giving birth in the living room on a bed. This girl already has about 10 brothers
or sisters. The main character runs across an old man living in a shack in an empty
lot. Magically, he somehow lifts the family out of their poverty.

I know that's not much to go on, but maybe it will ring a bell with some of you.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom.
