Subject: TARGET: Library Orientation Big6 style

Hi All -
Before we all go offline during Summer vacation, I wanted to ask about
lesson plans that others use for Library Orientation that are formatted
as a Big6 lesson. I work in a middle school library (grades 6-8) and
implemented Big6 this year. I thought it would be neat to create a
Library Orientation that teaches incoming 6th graders about the Library
while using the Big6 method.

If you have used this in the past, could you please forward your lesson
plans!? TIA!

Dear Collective Brain,

Pardon me if this has been a recent posting (I have several hundred, ok,
thousand I haven't gotten to yet, although I have scanned the subject
lines!)

I am searching for titles in the middle school to high school range that
have tolerance as a theme and has a more recent copyright date, say the
last
5 years or so.

If a title or two is worth recommending, please send it my way!

Thank you!

Here are the Top Ten (actually eleven, with a tie at #9) circulating =
titles at Hillside Junior High School in Boise, Idaho. We have
approximatel=
y 450 students in grades 7-9 (about 20 in grades 5-6 in a special =
program), and about 70 staff.
=20
Twilight - Meyer (62)
Airborn - Oppel (61)
Breaking Dawn - Meyer (58)
Eclipse - Meyer (50)
Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie - Lubar (49)
Skeleton Creek - Carman (48)
The Lightning Thief - Riordan (45)
The Sea of Monsters - Riordan (37)
Fallen Angels - Myers (33)
The Battle of the Labyrinth - Riordan (33)
Athletic Shorts - Crutcher (31)

Numbers in parentheses show total circulations this year so far. The
Oppel =
and Lubar titles were both local selections for Boise's "Kids Read the =
Same Book" program. Patrick Carman visited Hillside for an assembly and

Subject: HELP : Copyright and video clips

Hi,

I would appreciate a response from anyone who knows the law well enough
to =
comment.

Our orchestra teacher wishes to use video clips from musicals as a
visual b=
ackground (no sound, just the visual scene) for an upcoming Spring
concert =
where the students play related music. She will project them using a
data p=
rojector and said she is willing to use video clips of any length
supported=
by the law. Some of the pieces are from The Sound of Music and
Oklahoma.

Is this Fair Use? Or does she need to get permission from the
originators?
If OK, how long may the clips be?
If they charge for attendance would that be a factor?

Thank you.

8 of our top 10 were on our Battle of the Books lists. We have 6-8
copies =
of every title on this list. Other titles, I'm sure, would have been up

there if we had also had that many copies. For example, I can't keep
any =
of the Bone books in, but I have only 3 copies of each, so the circ =
numbers are still high, but not as high. On the other hand, I have 8 =
copies of Wimpy Kid, and they are always checked out as well. I'm sure

the movies helped for #s 3-5. =20
