Speaking as a child of former school custodians, I know what all they have to
do...that's why I don't expect our custodial staff to clean on a regular basis.
I'd really have to have one full time to dust.  We can dust one day and within 2-3
days have the tops of cases looking the same as they did when we first cleaned
them.  Some of this from the foot traffic in the hallways and some from the
"buffer" machine that cleans the hallways after school and kicks up dust.

We generally dust and vacuum on an as needed basis and the at the end of the year
during inventory we take books off and give all the shelves a good wipe-down with
Murphy's Oil Soap.  We have dusted once a week...but I'd say more like 1-2 time per
month and that's the parts people can see.  Two of my "sides" are open in to a
hallway on each side of the library.  The only thing separating the library from
the hallway are my bookshelves that are about 5 feet high.  When people start
walking by and writing in the dust...that's a sign for us...or if we know visitors
are coming!  Ha...

I always have to prepare myself...my allergies are mostly inside stuff.  After
years of getting sinus infections after filing lots of books, dusting, and during
inventory...I finally discovered face masks so now wear one whenever I file more
than a shelf load of books, do inventory, or dust.  Kids constantly drop in to see
why I'm dressed like a doctor!

Subject: Dirt in the library

How on earth do you keep the library clean? There's just no time and our
custodians don't clean in here, except to vacuum a little. Some of our
book sections that don't get a lot of checkout have actual dust that you
can blow off of the books. How much time do you spend cleaning (or do
you?)
