In our school all our custodians do daily is floors( dusted and vacuumed )
and trash until summer. Then the floors are stripped and rewaxed, shelves
are dusted and tables are cleaned. Over our Christmas break they work a few
extra days and they mopped the library. This summer everyone is moving but
me (new principal) so I don't expect the dusting and cleaning to be done
with all of the moving our two ladies have to do. They are great at helping
me if I specifically ask for boxes to be delivered or heavy things to be
sent to a teacher's room but regular cleaning is left to me. I am usually
behind but I do get my library club members to dust shelves occasionally.
They like to do it.

I know just what Gail is talking about. The amount of custodian time
in all the schools in our district has been whittled down slowly over
the years so dusting or cleaning the shelves NEVER happens. There is
no point in complaining to our administration, our custodians are
already stretched to their limit and our principal has little or no
say over the number of hours we get. I don't have carpet in my
library. I am seriously thinking about getting a mop and spot
cleaning the floor myself. The custodian we have sweeps the floor,
empties the garbage and recycling, and wipes off the tables. That's
all she has time for. The only time the shelves were dust free was
when we had a parent volunteer who took on washing shelves and did it
every other week.
