Hmmm, I see no difference between working off fines by shelving type chores and cleaning type chores. They are both chores that neaten the library for all the patrons. It is all in the delivery. If you welcome the child in, be excited that they came in to work off their responsibility and give them a range of chores to help out with, accompanied by an explanation of why that chore is necessary they will be happy to help you out. Give them a "would you like to do this or this" choice. You do the one they do not pick so they see that it really is something you need done. Have a time sheet for them to sign-in, write down their duties that day and sign-out time. You can either count up their time, or count down their time. Even the kids that work at McDonalds can pull bathroom duty! It is all part of many jobs out there to have to do something "not fun." It is the balance of fun and not fun chores that make all of us come back each day. So, are you the one that is giving the negative connotation to the chores you assign the kids? Or, are you reinforcing the notion that these are vital chores to the smooth running of the library and you welcome the student's desire to work off their responsibility? Every job has all sorts of stuff happening behind the scenes to make sure things on the surface are running smoothly, show the kids the real world and they won't be disappointed when they find at their first job one of their assigned chores is cleaning!
