Now it is my time to ask....

I grew up carrying a book everywhere. I read it all the time.. it
finally fell apart.
All I remember was that it was about a pond (or lake) which dried up
and the animals had to move away. Throughout the book this phrase was
repeated "Their pond [or lake], the pond they loved.." The visual
image I am pulling from my (old) memory makes me think it was a golden
book. I would LOVE to get another copy of it. Does anyone have an
idea about the title and/or author. Thanks in advance.
