Melody
I sent you a note off list of my pros and cons but I forgot to say if they make
shelves for you make sure you give them one of your tall books because they didn't
ask anyone what size they should be they just did it and made my selves too short
by about 1/8" now a lot of them have to lay down and it drives the little kids
crazy that they can't jam the book on the shelf straight up. Also they put some
kind of support strip of wood on the wall to the back of the shelf which causes the
books to get jammed under there and it messes up the covers trying to pull the book
out. BUY SHELVING! And a circulation unit from a library furniture company.
Also the portable's floor is not like a real building and shakes when the kids are
all in there. If you have sensitive equipment like a projector or Smartboard it
causes them to "bounce" sometimes. We can't get too rowdy with music and marching
etc which my little ones love to do ( so do I)

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] moving library to a portable?

Several years ago I *was *in a portable while the library was renovated. I
only had the essentials such as favorite books and everything else was in
storage or in the classrooms. The weight of the books was too much for
whatever was holding up the portable, and it collapsed on one side. Books
are extremely heavy so if you do this, make sure the district engineer
accounts for this weight and adjusts the floor supports.

I have moved several times--it must be my karma. Here are my top three
moving tips:
1. Get lots of adult volunteers.
2. Use bankers boxes and mark the call# number on the outside.
3. Plan where everything will go before you start to move. Go from the old
shelf to the new shelf. I never had the luxury of using rolling carts to
move, but if your do, use the volunteers to go old shelf to new shelf with
the carts.
