We've been open to our neighborhood students in the summer for the past 10 years or so. We are always a summer school site so the building is open anyway (and the district is picking up the tab for the A/C). We keep the summer school hours - my aide normally staffs it - she also serves the summer school teachers (and yes, she's paid for her efforts). Our rule that that students going into the 4, 5 or 6th grade can come alone and that children younger than that MUST be accompanied by an adult (it can be a mother / aunt/ grandmother etc) and that adult must STAY with them. We are only open to "our kids" because they know the rules and expectations. We insist on the adult staying with the younger children because otherwise we'd also be babysitting - and we'd be stuck with kids with no way to get home once the summer school day was finished.
