Students don't give a flip about their grade cards, but they DO care an awful lot
about prom, yearbooks, and other "fun" activities. We've had excellent luck making
"no overdue books or fines" a requirement to attend the 9th grade dinner/dance and
end-of-year picnic as well as to receive one's yearbook here at our junior high.
;-) Our administration is very supportive and we also coordinate with the office
so they get all their missing fees paid up at the same time. The high school also
refuses to check out textbooks to anyone with lingering fines or overdues, so we
get a lot back in the fall, too.

I know there are students out there who are truly poor, and I don't mean to
denigrate them. However, it amazes me how many students claim they can't afford
$15 for a lost library book but CAN afford $25 for the dinner and dance tickets.

Collective Brain:

My principal has sent around a suggestion sheet for next year's student handbook.
I need to change the policy that states: Students with library material checked out
will not receive their grade report at the end of the year.

Students and parents don't care if they get a paper copy because they can now check
out their grades online.
The seniors are not supposed to receive their diplomas - which we cannot enforce.

I would appreciate hearing back on how this is handled at your school.

Thanks in advance.
