I was hired in October last year, a year and two months (about 12
semester hours) before I completed my degree -- in mid-year, no less. I
graduated in December 2008. I am the only certified librarian in my
(high school) library, and I have an almost-full-time aide, as well as
student aides. I have to agree with others that on-the-job training is
worth a great deal, especially since I had not done a practicum before
taking this job. Luckily for me, the librarian who was leaving stayed
for a week to help train me and stayed available for panicked phone
calls afterward, my aide is great with the circulation system and book
processing, and all of my local librarian friends helped me out when I
ran across something that I couldn't figure out.
There were lots of times when I felt completely out of my league during
that time, but most of the staff were patient and helpful.
Library school is an amazing resource for the why's and who's and
where's that you will need, but they can't tell you how to run or
catalog on your specific circulation system.
The best advice I can give you is to network with other librarians in
your school district, neighboring districts, service center, and local
public libraries. They will be GREAT resources.
Good luck!
