There are a number of librarians in my district who are working without an MLS,
though all are taking classes. Some had some hours under their belt when they
signed on, others had none. Spring Branch is in partnership with the University of
Houston / Clear Lake and offers MLS classes within the district.
Our director teaches in the program and I know he uses the classes to "field test"
potential librarians.

Good librarians are in short supply in Houston -and our director has high standards.

I came onboard with an MLS degree, but with the teacher cert. so I learned on the
job too.

Personally, I can't imagine running a library without having taken at least 1
cataloging and materials section/acquistion class.

Two of my teachers are in the program and they now have a great deal more respect
for my job!
