Sorry for the delay in getting this out. I have decided that when students come & sign in at our LMC, they need to first squirt some hand sanitizer (purrell) before moving on. Thanks to Patti, Shannon, Deb and Mary, here are their responses regarding hygiene in the LMC during these uncertain days: ---------------------------------------------------------------- I have trained all of my students to use hand sanitizer before using any of our library / research lab computers. I keep a bottle of it beside every computer and they are really good about remembering. --------------------------------------------------------------- Word here in Vermont from the state health department is that the virus can live for 2 hours without a human host. Of course, in 2 hours, that could effect a lot of students. Our plan if swine flu appears here in VT is to monitor all students for flu symptoms, with any students with cold or flu symptoms sent home. For library materials, we'll have the return cart sit for half-a-day, then process returns. In our labs, we're using Lysol spray on keyboards. -------------------------------------------------------------- Since the MRSA scare of last year, our district determined that the best solution is to concentrate on having everyone be super aware about washing or sanitizing their hands frequently and properly covering their mouths when coughing or sneezing. The problem with sanitizing objects is that as soon as they are touched they are recontaminated and that would be an impossible chore to keep up with. Personal hygiene will be the best solution. This is just my opinion and I am not a health professional by any means. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know that we are spraying everything down with a strong disinfectant and that I air spray it toward the shelves hoping that enough lands on the books to kill the germs with out harming the books. I am also going to pull any books by students who appear to have any flu like symptoms, and put them in a bag for a few days.
