I would like to hear feedback from you about a situation that I was just placed into. I am a librarian (strictly speaking, I am only in charge of the library) at a private school of 400. Due to lower than expected enrollment we are short about 50 students for next year. I was just informed that my schedule will be cut by 20% or one day a week. While I would appreciate the extra day to do home things ( I have 3 small children and recovering from health issues), I was disappointed in how it was presented. It was presented as "we are cutting all special areas so we will need to cut one day from your schedule as well". NOTHING against P.E. or music, or art, but I don't equate all of these areas. How would all of you suggest that I present it so as not to lose favor with my administrator, but get my point across; WE all know how much work that we are responsible for, and how we are more than "checking in and out books". What also hurt me deeply is that I was told a volunteer could come in the extra day and shelve books or do circulation... I know that my response was NOT professional so I am in a small hole right now all ready. I know that it is temporary with the economy, but we are changing our admin at the end of 2010 school year and I don't want this to be a permanent situation of "well it works well and we could spend the money elsewhere" I did make a point of pulling the SACS manual and pointing out that a school NEEDS a library with a certified librarian for certification purposes.
