[LM_NET] Target: picture book/chapter book pairs

Hi all,

I work at a K-12 school serving only students with special education  
needs. As part of a literacy committee, I'm working with teachers to  
plan a project that will involve all staff and students in the reading  
of two books next fall, a picture book and a chapter book.

Ideally the two books will make a good pairing, and have themes of  
diversity and belonging. We are hoping to find a chapter book that is  
at a maturity and reading level appropriate for average middle school  
students. Any suggestions? We would like to purchase lots of copies of  
these books for our students to have, so it is necessary to have  
titles still in print and ideally available in paperback. If you  
cannot think of a couple of books on the theme of diversity and  
belonging but some other chapter book/picture book pair comes to mind,  
I would love to hear those ideas too. I'll post a hit if I get enough  
response.
