I'm planning to have a GREAT working relationship with our IT person next year as it will be ME. As a cost cutting measure I was told they are doing away with the IT person at all high schools in our county and it would be added to MY job. I will be in charge of 9 servers, over 900 computers throughout the school. Not to mention school-wide inventory. It was chosen because 10 years ago I used to do this at another school. When networking was just getting started! I had to teach people about email and easy stuff like that. When I came here I was told it was not my job to touch any of those things and to stay in the LMC and not do any techie stuff. The library also has textbooks AND another cost cutting measure was to cut all aide positions in all the libraries as well. We do have two media specialists. The second media specialist is new to our school this year and new to our state and got engaged to a guy 5 hours away...think she'll commute? They do not expect library services to be hurt by this and although no one has said, but I'm pretty sure they don't want any network problems, computer glitches, or software screw-ups either <g> Gotta keep that sense of humor (or am I just going mad?...I cannot decide). lm Lynette (LYNN) Mitchell Library Media Specialist Crystal River High School 1205 NE 8th Ave. Crystal River, Florida 34428 mitchelll@citrus.k12.fl.us 352-795-4641 ext: 248 352-795-4519 FAX Currently reading: Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson Just finished: Unwind by Neal Shusterman What about you? -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of Maureen Irwin Sent: Monday, May 11, 2009 9:10 PM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Re: Tar: IT/LMS relations You are right about them being overworked -- and usually underappreciated. We have a great relationship with our IT folks. We've pretty well established the difference in our positions: They teach navigation and we teach seeking skills. There is much mutual appreciation between the two depts., and in fact, the IT head put this quote up when he created a link to the OPAC and the databases within the internal e-mail system: Librarians are almost always very helpful and often almost absurdly knowledgeable. Their skills are probably very underestimated and largely underemployed. - The Social Audit Consumer Handbook, Macmillan, 1978, p. 41 Charles MEDAWAR We loved it! Maureen S.
