I would love to hear more ideas about teaching the internet to this age group. If
you have something that has been working for you, please send it my way! Below is
my question and responses. Thanks!

*Original Query*
Hello- I am planning to do a lesson with third graders next week about
the internet and internet searching. Does anyone have an introductory
internet lesson for this level they'd be willing to share? Are there
particular search engines, strategies, web sites that you recommend I
share with them? Any help would be appreciated!

I did most of my internet lessons using CyberSmart curriculum. The
students enjoyed them. The have site identified to go with almost
each lesson.

The sites are located under Student Links

when i was introducing internet searching to my third graders I usually started
with
www.factmonster.com (we now have Nettrekker.com so I might use that instead) I
would
normally demonstrate in a whole class setting -- it would be great with the
smartboard if
you have one. I would demonstrate keywords and boolean strategies (using quotes
around
words etc) I would brainstorm with the students on how could we get our number of
hits
smaller (adding keywords etc) --- this usually got them excited. I would do this
over a
couple of lessons --- once I did it with Eddie Murphy (the actor) and as the
students
brainstormed we got it down to 10 hits -- they really got excited about that ---

Last year we used Ranger Rick's website a lot with that
age group. Since I haven't used it this year, I don't know
what is like recently but the kids loved it before and
there was lot of interactive activities for them to play
around with.

cybersmart's website - great!
