I let my kindergarteners take books home in the fall after about 3 weeks of
library intro and book care.
I tell them they are making a promise to take care of the books and bring
them back every time they come to library. I send letters home to parents
explaining the policy and I have a sign and return form on the bottom with
the student's name. I keep these in case there are any complaints when I
send the price of a book home for a ruined or lost book.
Our kids come weekly so this is much better and for the first several weeks
of check out I ask the teachers to make them keep the books at school. I
have a special group of books I pull for them and a cart to put them on and
have an old fashioned pocket and card in the back of each kindergarten book.
Each child has a card with their name and homeroom on it and they put that
card in the pocket inside the back cover so the teacher (and they) will know
which book is checked out to which child. The teachers help them keep up
with their books. I also implemented a reading bag program with 3 or 4 extra
books (all Caldecott) for each homeroom to share with a grown up at home for
a week. One student per class gets to take a turn with this bag each week.
They bring it back to the library and the next person gets a turn. I wrote a
grant for the extra books. They enjoy this and I only lost a few books to
damage this year and all parents paid for them no problems.
To begin check out for them I put all the books I pulled for them out on a
table and I call 3 or 4 quiet students to come a choose a book from that
table and then they come and check them out in their name. I ask each one to
tap a quiet friend to come up to check out when they have checked out and
they are to sit and "read" their new books after check out. After Christmas
I show them how to use a shelf marker and go to the shelves for a selection.
Some students can do it others can't. If they have trouble using the shelf
marker I ask them to go back to the table to select. Some choose to continue
doing that.. too much stress to remember shelf rules. I let them decide.
Good luck
PS when they leave I am TIRED!

Subject: [LM_NET] Kindergarten and the library

Good Morning Netters;
I would like to pick your brains this morning. How many of you allow your
kindergarten students to take books home? This is my first year back with
kindergarten after a 9 year run with high school. I was in a rotation this
year where I saw a class for one week at a time once per six weeks. It was
actually seven with kindergarten as we have seven k classes. I did not feel
that this type of schedule was conducive to letting the kinders take their
books home. Right now they check books out under their teachers' name and
keep them in centers in the classroom. I have been approached by the
kindergarten to allow student checkouts and take home next year. I don't
have a problem with that if the scheduling gets better (I am told that it
will be), but I would like to wait until after Thanksgiving or Christmas to
get their routine down. What is your policy? I would appreciate your
imput.
