Advocacy strategies that require little effort.

* Have a library staff board in the library (clearly visible) - pics of
staff + their titles + their qualifications.
* 2 FAQs/instruction sheets by the photocopier: 1) FAQ + phone number
and contact person for maintenance, 2) Basic instructions to
troubleshoot paper jams (titled basic instructions so their can be no
mistake that anyone including a 2yo can do it).
* brag board - containing publications, special projects (staff and
students), information from conferences attended, anything that says you
and others of your ilk are professionals.

We need to present ourselves as major contributors to the core business
of the school - ie. student teaching and learning outcomes, otherwise we
will be forever regarded as some sort of glorified receptionist!

Another TL said I could share this with you all...

A 'busy' teacher using the library photocopier summoned the TL (new at
her school) and treated her like a lackey to fix a paper misfeed in the
photocopier. Now the TL didn't feel comfortable with the manner in which
she was summoned and had no wish or need to fix the paper misfeed
herself as she voluntarily started half an hour early to open the
library before her library assistant arrived anwyay and school services
officers fixed this and it did not interest her as she does a lot of
things voluntarily but not this. The teacher said to the TL ' Not
knowing how to fix a photocopy problem is like someone working in a
coffee shop and not knowing how to fix things' (or something to that
effect). Then when the TL tried to tactfully discuss it with her today
the teacher said 'Der' not knowing how to fix a basic photocopy problem.

The TL then sent the teacher the School Library Association role
statement for TL's as intelligent, mutually respectful conversation
seemed beyond this teacher.

What do you think?

Regards

Ruth
