This email was sent to all the media specialists in our district. It
concerns summer reading lists. I cheered when I read it. Instead of
individual titles they are recommending authors' collective works. If
there is interest I'll post the elementary and/or the teen reading list.

Greetings Everyone!

Recently Learning Resources & Instructional Materials, Secondary Language
Arts, Elementary Reading curriculum departments, and Paul Gress, SBBC
Partnerships, met with Broward County Library Youth Services Director,
Gina Moon, along with representatives from Broward regional public
libraries to discuss concerns with summer reading lists from Broward
County Schools.

Over the last few years parents and students throughout the county have
become increasingly frustrated when they they go to the public library
branches seeking specific titles on summer reading lists that have been
given to them by schools and the items are not available at the library,
or in such small quantities that the student will not have a chance to
check out and read the item before the summer is over.

With the current economic climate, more families than ever before are
relying on public libraries for summer reading resources. Many families
simply cannot afford to purchase recommended books from local book stores
if the title is not available at the public library. After discussing
the issue and possible solutions, the group decided on the following
recommendations that will support our common goal of motivating our
students to read over the summer.

Current SBBC Policy:

Recommended titles on summer reading lists are a school based decision.
Reading Coaches, Language Arts teachers, and Media Specialists are
encouraged to work collaboratively to provide students with suggested
summer reading. The lists should be submitted and shared with local
libraries as early in the year as possible.

1. Author-based Lists:

Avoid listing specific titles and instead create a recommended list
of high quality authors. That way, students will have more resources to
choose from at the public library.

2.Check Item Availability:

Prior to publishing and distributing your school summer reading
lists, first check the availability of items at local library branches
near your school. Your media specialist can assist you with checking the
public library catalog system.

3.Public Library Purchasing Time-line:

Broward County libraries make every effort to support our curriculum.
However, in order to have items ordered and shelf ready for summer reading
programs, the items must be purchased by February. If your school is
going to require specific titles or recommended summer reading, please
submit those summer reading titles to your local library by February.

4.Take Advantage of your Public Library:

Since we have missed the purchasing deadline for notifying Broward
Libraries of summer reading lists for this year, Broward County Library
Youth Directors have created a list of recommended reading for children by
age and grade level based on current public library resources. We highly
recommend schools consider these resources when creating 2009 summer
reading lists.

5. Required Reading

Middle and High school students often have "required" reading for the
summer with some assessment on the material in the fall. Schools should
make every effort to provide any required reading materials to students.
The public library does not have sufficient quantities to meet the reading
needs of thousands of students assigned the same title. Again, we
recommend suggesting authors and various genres of literature. It is
imperative that it is very clear on your summer reading lists that
students may read other materials to fulfill the requirements of the
summer reading assignment.

If you have any questions, please remember to reply to sender, and email
me directly.

Thank you,
Lynne
