Hi, Thanks to everybody who gave me suggestions for picture
book/chapter book pairs on the themes of belonging and diversity for
our "everybody reads" program next year. Here follows the list of
titles that people suggested, along with one of my own.

My Name is Yoon by Helen Recorvits c.2003 (Disliking her name as
written in English, Korean-born Yoon, or "shining wisdom," refers to
herself as "cat," "bird," and "cupcake," as a way to feel more
comfortable in her new school and new country.)
and
Molly By Any Other Name by Jean Davies Okimoto, c1990 (A teenage Asian
girl who has been adopted by non-Asian parents decides to find out who
her biological parents are.)

The tale of Despereaux : being the story of a mouse, a princess, some
soup, and a spool of thread / Kate DiCamillo ; illustrated by Timothy
Basil Ering.
With--Chester's way / by Kevin Henkes. or any of his other mouse
books.

If each student will get 1 book, you might look into the 2 youth
versions that have been written based upon Greg Mortenson's 3 CUPS OF
TEA.

Tolan, Stephanie S. (2002) Surviving the Applewhites. New York: Harper
Collins.
  with
Hoffman, Mary. (1991) Amazing Grace. Dial Books for Young Readers.
These both have to do with finding a sense of belonging and putting on a play.

Choldenko, Gennifer. (2004) Al Capone Does my Shirts. New York: G.P.
Putnam Sons.
With the picture book?
Stewart, Sarah. (1997) The Gardener. Farar. Strous. Giroux.
Both of these books take place in the 30's and have to do with family
relationships.
