David-

I've kept the NG's just because our collection is SO complete. There's something
really visceral about handling the magazines and the archival quality of the
articles. Great to use the database to find the articles, then we sticky-note them
when pulling them for teacher subjects. I love this for the "I can't find anything"
kid. (Know him?)

I also keep 5 years of majors (Time, Newsweek, SI,. a few others) as per
"differentiated learning." I've seen physical signs of relief when students have
been handed hard copies of magazines with info that they want. Not every kid wants
to use an electronic database--and most should be given the opportunity to remember
the validity of "hard" resources.

We've also got 40+ years of bound "Time" and "Life" magazines at the HS that are
wonderful.

I've also re-introduced the notion of vertical files, though I have few. I've got a
hard file of 9-11 magazines and newspapers. I've also got a few others (Obama
Inauguration, Saddam's fall, etc.) I think that these have historical, archival
uses. Again--there's something really visceral about "handling history" that you
don't get from a computer screen.

Harry.

What shall I do? Keep 2-3 months back for each of the 70 magazines we
subscribe to?

Shall I get rid of National Geographic? All of them?

My gut feeling says YES because most are available via databases.

I need just a little push before making the move.

Your advice on this would be valuable and as always, appreciated.
