The American Memory Collection at the Library of Congress http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html has more than 50 pictures of people in wheelchairs, and that was with a very straight forward, one-stop search on "wheelchair." Most date from the 1920, and most are pictures of adults, but there is one that might be perfect for your investigators. It is an early 1900's picture of a group of children on crutches, gathered around and reaching out to a boy in a wheelchair. (I found it easier to find the ones I wanted to see up close using the Gallery View option.) A broader search of all their print collections http://www.loc.gov/fedsearch/index.tkl?PHPSESSID=a489cbe52fa3c855d302079d2ec bdc99 <http://www.loc.gov/fedsearch/index.tkl?PHPSESSID=a489cbe52fa3c855d302079d2e cbdc99&cclquery=wheelchair&targets%5B%5D=webpages&targets%5B%5D=ammem&target s%5B%5D=ppoc&targets%5B%5D=recommend&Search=Search> &cclquery=wheelchair&targets%5B%5D=webpages&targets%5B%5D=ammem&targets%5B%5 D=ppoc&targets%5B%5D=recommend&Search=Search brought back a broader scope and larger number of pictures, some dating further back as well. If these don't return enough to meet the student's needs, you might want to go to the Digital Collections area at the LOC and search for wheelchair in the Veterans section or the International section among others. This site, the History of the Wheelchair, includes illustrations and photographs all the way back to ancient civilizations. http://www.wheelchairnet.org/WCN_WCU/SlideLectures/Sawatzky/WC_history.html Wikipedia pipes in with some 90 amazing photographs. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wheelchairs And not to be outdone, Google Images brought this page to my attention. http://images.google.com/images?q=wheelchair+history <http://images.google.com/images?q=wheelchair+history&hl=en&safe=active&rlz= 1R2ADBS_en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=9aERSuTnCoGItgfnssmbCA&sa=X&oi=image_result_grou p&resnum=11&ct=title> &hl=en&safe=active&rlz=1R2ADBS_en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=9aERSuTnCoGItgfnssmbCA&sa =X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=11&ct=title Good luck to your you and your student!
