I tell my kids during orientation in the Fall -"don't ever tell me "I
never checked that out" -- being defensive doesn't work. Tell me
instead "I don't remember checking that book out" Everyone get
forgetful sometimes -- me included and I will do my best to help you
remember!"

Generally, when they come in insisting they "didn't" I gently suggest
that what they really mean is that they can't remember" Today -- I
couldn't get this one frequent offender to change her approach so I was
bad and lost my temper with her -- got cussed out in exchange SIGH!!

After reading the messages on this thread, I realize I'm not alone. A
student came in after receiving her end-of-the-year overdue notice and
told me that I had made a mistake--she did not check out those books.
After I explained the checkout procedures, showing that there could not
have been an error, her memory was jogged and she indicated that she
might have borrowed them.

So many students tell me that they have already returned their materials
(and a small percentage of them are right) that I feel like I'm giving a
memorized speech.

A sixth-grader borrowed a very old book: Robin Hood by Gilbert (I don't
recall the author's first name) in early March. She came in and
insisted she did not borrow this book and would have had no reason to
read it. After the student left, I remembered that an old-looking book
was needed for the sixth grade play, and this lucky girl was the one who
checked it out.

Sometimes my volunteer (I only call her that because she's not paid;
she's invaluable) and I wonder if there is a genetic tendency to not
returning library materials, as we see so many members of the same
families with overdues.

Currently reading Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkatraman.
