The basic concept of how a library works is and always has been part of my
orientation. I guess it started because I began in an elementary school in
which I assumed no prior knowledge. Now that I am in middle school I have
continued the practice but in a more humorous way - I'll ask the students to
give me the definition of "borrow" and I write down responses on the
whiteboard. Sometimes I'll ask a student if I can borrow their pen/pencil
and after I have it in my hand I'll tell everyone they need to take notes
while I surreptitiously set the pen down behind my computer. When the
student asks for their pen back I make a cursory look around my computer,
shrug my shoulders, and tell them I lost it so they'll have to buy another
one. You get the picture...
Anyway, adjust it to the maturity level of your audience but always talk
about the concept of borrowing, returning, and responsibility. They just
don't seem to be learning it at home...
