I have two things I do to help with getting smoked. The first is to check shelves before sending out overdues. We are human and make mistakes. We always catch a few. Then when a student tells me that they have returned it, I can tell them that I have checked the shelf and it is not there. I offer to check again and ask them to do the same. Offering to help seems to diffuse some anger. Sometime it works. Sometimes I end up holding the phone at arms length. I had a high school boy come in today and tell me that he had returned his overdue book "a long time ago". When I told him that I had checked the shelves twice and it wasn't there his response was. "Well what did you do with it?" The second is to try run an inventory just before school is out. Then I can search for books in Athena's inventory. If some little guy has returned his book and "shelved it himself", I can see which two books it is between and find it. This also is great when I have a parent dispute whether it is in the library or not. I plug in the BC number and when it doesn't show on inventory they have a hard time arguing with the computer. "Yes, I have checked every single book in the library. It is not here."
