I allow students to give me a good- to excellent-condition copy of a
novel that they have read for their English class in order to remove
fines from their record. They can't use them to replace a lost book or
to pay for a purchase. This helps me to get more copies of the novels
that students will need for next year.

Actually, I do take books in lieu of lost items, or even fines. But it
