Hi Everyone-- Looking for a mini working vacation this summer? I am excited to announce that BER (Bureau of Education & Research, www.BER.org) is once again sponsoring its fabulous two-day Children's Literature Conference this July. Last summer, our crackerjack team of cutting edge and savvy children’s literature experts—including Anita Silvey, author and former editor of Horn Book Magazine; Barbara Swanson Sanders, children's literature consultant; and yours truly—barnstormed through Chicago and Austin and had an absolute blast. This summer, we're getting ready for another two-day blitz in Portland, OR (Monday, July 20-Tuesday, July 21) and Salt Lake City (Wednesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 23), two incredibly gorgeous cities. If you're looking for a combination vacation--part fooling around with new and recent children's books, part touring and seeing the sights--this could be it. Over the two days, each of us will be presenting seven different sessions on every aspect of children's literature, giving you a wide range to choose from. Our emphasis will be on unforgettable books no teacher or librarian can live without, plus a wealth of practical strategies and innovative ideas that you can use immediately in your K-6 grade classroom or library. Come with friends and revel in our lively and information-packed children's book sabbatical! Come alone and you'll make new friends for sure. Last summer, some folks from out of town brought their spouses and kids to the hotel and made it part of a family vacation. Each participant will receive an extensive resource handbook (400+ pages!) that includes lesson plans, activities, worksheets, ideas, and booklists for all of the sessions offered, even those you don't attend. Materials will be on display and you will have an opportunity to meet and share with other children's literature enthusiasts. Go to www.BER.org and look up Seminars, then click on the state and city, and you'll find the full brochure, registration, and site details. Or, for Portland, go right to: www.ber.org/seminar_schedule.cfm?location=PTO&group=E For Salt Lake City, go to: http://www.ber.org/seminar_schedule.cfm?location=SAL&group=E) I hope you'll be able to attend our fascinating and fun two-day crash course. Our goal is to help you strengthen your own children's literature program with loads of new books and lots of innovative ways you can use them with your students. I'll be bringing my little guitar (Bigfoot), as many books as I can carry, samples of students' work, props, puppets, stories, songs, and then some for our sizzling summer show-and-tell bookfest. Wahoo! I can't wait to go! If your schedule allows, I hope we'll see you there.
