Happy Friday, everyone! Here is the compiled list of books suggested to include in a vibrant (and ideally, utilized!), up-to-date professional collection. I'm going to move my collection to a more accessible location, and really talk it up next year. Hopefully that will bring more attention to this collection and improve its circulation. Feel free to share! ● Crucial Conversations by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan, Al Switzer, and Stephen Covey ● Crucial Confrontations by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan, Al Switzer, and Stephen Covey ● Good to Great by Jim Collins ● What Great Teachers Do Differently by Todd Whitaker—It is a short book with a great message ● The Traveler's Gift by Andy Andrews ● When Kids Can't Read by Kylene Beers ● What Works in Schools: Translating Research Into Action by Robert J. Marzano ● Copyright for Schools: A Practical Guide, Fourth Edition by Carol Simpson ● 7 Keys to Comprehension by Susan Zimmerman & Chryse Hutchins: easy-to-understand, practical ways to help kids think about and understand what they read. ● Mosaic of Thought by Zimmerman and Ellin Oliver: like above, will help teachers model and build in strategies for higher level thinking. ● Nonfiction Matters: Reading, Writing and Research in Grades 3-8 by Stephanie Harvey: encourages teachers to use more non-fiction texts and writing exercises to capture the interest of kids who aren't nuts about fiction (AKA most boys). ● Any book by Jonathan Kozol will stir up good discussion. Shame of the Nation was a powerful read. ● Smart Schools by David Perkins tackles the problem of inertia in schools, which stifles innovative teaching techniques and discourages collaboration and communication. ● The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher by Harry Wong ● A Framework for Understanding Poverty by Ruby Payne—I receive requests on this from other schools; 5 of our 10 copies are checked out on average ● any book by Robert Marzano ● Meet Me in the Middle by Rick Wormeli ● Fair Isn't Equal both by Rick Wormeli ● I Read It, but I Don't Get It by Cris Tovani ● Reading Don't Fix No Chevys by Jeff Wilhelm ● anything by Janet Allen (Tools for Teaching Content Literacy, Yellow Brick Roads, It’s Never Too Late, etc.) ● The Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell, Zlata Filipovic, and Freedom Writers ● Readicide by Kelly Gallagher ● Strategies That Work by Stephanie Harvey ● Making the Match: The Right Book for the Right Reader at the Right Time, Grades 4-12 by Teri Lesesne ● Naked Reading: Uncovering What Tweens Need to Become Lifelong Learners by Teri Lesesne ● Teach Like Your Hair’s on Fire by Rafe Esquith ● Teaching Outside the Box: How to Grab Your Students by Their Brains by LouAnne Johnson ● The Narcissism Epidemic by Jean Twenge and W. Keith Campbell ● A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future by Daniel Pink ● An Ethic of Excellence: Building a Culture of Craftsmanship in Schools by Ron Berger Have lovely Memorial Day weekend!
