Thanks to everyone who sent suggestions. Here is what people sent as suggestions of companies, as well as brands to get or avoid. ---------- Barcodes, Inc. Their website is barcodeplanet.com. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to work with. ------------ Custom Sensors http://www.csensors.com/ccd_page.html ----------- I don't recall who I bought it (it was some online vendor) but our Symbol LS2208 scanner cost approx $150 and works great. Support from Symbol (now owned by Motorola) is absolutely exemplary. We had some wierd barcodes and they worked with us to program the sscanner to read them correctly. ------------ The best price I found was from a company called ID Recall. Their scanner was about half what one from Sagebrush cost, was convertible to a battery pack for inventory, and was very reliable. You can find them by searching the web. http://www.idrecall.com/ ------------- Rena, we've always used barcodes.com. The actual name of the company is Barcode Logics. We've purchased several Symbol barcode guns that cost about $250 or something like that. The man who runs the business (I think his name is Tim) has always given us a discount off the retail price, even if we were only buying one gun. Theyve always worked with whatever we had (we used Athena and Alexandria.) -------------- two people mentioned Amazon ------------ I got mine from a local (independent) computer supply company. It cost a little over $100, is programmable to read more than one symbology (which my library has) and has a hands-free stand. Took our tech man a while to program it because the instructions weren't that good, but it's worked fine for 2 years now. ------------- I bought mine through pcmall.com. It cost around $130, and the tech support folks even sent me the barcodes to set it up to function perfectly with my automation software. I will never buy one from Follett again! ------------ Can't suggest but I can suggest you avoid the Jaguar as it drops scans constantly. --------------------- -- Rena Deutsch, Librarian Seward Park Campus Schools 350 Grand St. New York, NY 10002 (212) 475-4148 x435 rdlibnyc@gmail.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
