Wise ones,

Next fall, our high schools will implement a program called Structured Learning
Environment. High school seniors, ostensibly great kids and Advanced Placement
students, will shadow and work for a mentor every afternoon, 4-5 days per week.
Ideally, they'd want me as a mentor because they aspire to be a school librarian.
I would be expected to give them the opportunity to perform all aspects of my job,
similar to a student teaching experience. I teach classes during the time they'd
be here, except two five-minute breaks, so they'd be working independently.

If anyone has experience with a program like this, please share your conclusions
with me.

There is a possibility that we will lose our full-time media assistant next year,
but we don't know yet. She thinks that high school kids might be more useful than
parent volunteers, more reliable and cooperative. We are already familiar with
problems with parents in the building, so please don't bother sending me your
horror stories. Also, it is too late for me to persuade anyone to keep our
assistant, and we are coming to terms with it.

I have a fixed schedule. We have about 900 students in 42 classes. Twenty-one
classes come every week all year. The other 21 classes come for classes for half
the year, and quick book exchanges the other half.

I appreciate your help!
