My original request was:
I have had a request for a story that my principal read in the fifth grade, almost
30 years ago. It is about a girl who always wore a ribbon around her neck. A boy
constantly asked her why she wore the ribbon, but she would not tell him. Finally
after many years they are married and she asks him if he still wants to know why
she wears the ribbon around her neck. He says yes, so she takes off the ribbon and
her head falls off. Does anyone know the name of the story or what book I can find
it in?
Evidently there are several versions of this story. The response I received most
often was that it is found in the book In a Dark, Dark Room by Alvin Schwartz.
Many of you agreed that it is definitely found in one of Alvin Schwartz's scary
story books. A few versions of the story are also found online.
