I used these with K-8 students in a small district. I let them decorate them and
then used book tape to put their student barcode on one end of the stick. I had my
woodworking students make me a sturdy divided tray to stand them in. Each section
had the teacher's name. When I had time, I would lay them out at their seat before
their class came in or I had them sit in assigned seat and randomly called their
names to return books to me. I gave them their stick to go get new books and return
to line to check them out.

Then I just scanned their barcode and book barcode and they returned sticks to
their teacher's section in the tray. If they didn't have a book to return they had
to take from a pile to read while waiting their turns.

This seemed to work and they took care of them because they had decorated the
sticks themselves. They got quite proficient at it and knew no stick no book.

Hope this helps. I also used the sticks drawn randomly to group them for certain
projects.
