Sometimes when it is a teacher who has lost an item and is remorseful I just ask
them to donate a book they really liked to the library. Sometimes the responsible
ones just have a need to atone and this is a way they can both do that and share a
part of themselves with the kids. It's a win win.

Now the guy at my school who currently own $150.00+ in lost books -- not quite sure
what to do about him. He is remorseful, but that's about it.

I think I know how some of our chronic non-book return students will end up. They
will become teachers who do the same thing. I do the very best I can to get the
books back from the teachers, but, ultimately, it's up to them to be responsible.
One year I had two teachers who acted completely differently. One absolutely
insisted she had returned the book (I've heard that before!), and the other had her
check book out ready to pay, owning up to the responsibility. I took no money. I
never expect teachers to pay. It is the taxpayers and kids who lose out, not me
personally. I don't see how it would have been fair to charge the teacher who was
being responsible, and not charge the other one. Unfortunately book loss is a cost
of doing business whether it comes from students or teachers. Just how I handle
things here. And I'm not dealing with lots of books like some of our members have
talked about.
