There was a very good posting on this subject awhile back by Dr. Allan
O'Grady Cuseo, whose posts I always enjoy. I saved this one, and am
repeating it here:

"I have always taught it this way - may be true or it may just be in my
warped mind. In the old days - many books were in stacks and closed areas -
so the librarian had to "call" someone to get it for the person. Sometimes I
yell across the room "Hey I need 398.2 Colum right now - get it for me! I
talk about conveyor belts, elevators, phones, someone yelling down the
stairs -- all "calling" for the book. I even tell them about NYPL and pages
on roller skates going to get the books - fascinating story - and the
students love it - and they never forget what a call number is (hopefully)."

Subject: [LM_NET] Call numbers by any other name?

I had a fifth-grade student ask me today why call numbers are called
call numbers, and I didn't have an answer for him. What does the "call"
part mean?
