So much great stuff has already been said, and I can heartily second things like...

  - It takes 3 years.
  - Do the weeding, your collection will thank you.
  - Keep chocolate and snacks; my staff loves me for it; I've become a guilty
pleasure; and I get some great planning (and a bit of gossip too); the fire
marshall made me toss my coffee pot
  - Judy's 17 things for media specs still makes me teary (I've been in the biz 15
years) and I read it every year; "Judy, it was in my bundle of books I brough home
for the summer."
  - oh yes, the stuff about your assistant is so very true

  - a couple of other things now...  1)  find those wonderful favorite books to
read aloud, practice them and think of creative ways to share them with students
(YES read them to upper grades, too!); 2)  schedule a chat with your principal to
discuss his/her vision and funding for the library, having this talk early will set
the tone for professional expectations and help you begin that relationship of
trust because your library deserves the funding and you WILL spend the money the
best way possible.

I loved Harry Coffill's practical and hilarious advice.
Which made me remember I wrote a whole chapter of
similar pithy advice in Books Kids Will Sit Still For 3
(Libraries Unlimited, 2006; www.LU.com) called
"Seventeen Things You Need to Know to Be a Great
School Librarian." It's too long to reproduce, and I don't
actually have permission to do so, but if you have a copy
of the book lying around, holding open a door or propping
up a table somewhere (it's 3 lbs.--great for aerobic weights
in a pinch, too), then take a look on pages 5-15.
