Nicole,

If you place the damaged book back on the shelf, you are telling all the
students that this is "acceptable" for a library book. Is it? (It wasn't
minor, accidental damage!) What I think would be better would be to create a
"dummy" book from a tissue box, wrapped up to look like a book with a spine
label, and then, on the cover, a notice that "We're sorry, but this title is
no longer available for your reading pleasure due to vandalism." Keep the
book behind the counter and if students are curious, show them.

People make choices on how to live and behave. Some people buy in an
expensive neighborhood and then let their place look like a dump. Others,
due to situations beyond their control, live the best they can, but manage
to stay physically clean and sober - even if it means taking refuge under a
bridge at night or living out of a camper. Some people who live in rundown
neighborhoods still manage to plant flowers, or keep a veggie garden at the
shared community lots, and keep their living area tidy. Others don't, and
not all of them are mentally ill - they're just careless or lazy or
oblivious (or sadly, even hateful) to the idea of living courteously in a
shared society. Or, like your student, they've got some mistaken ideas about
how to take care of communal property.

And then there are those of us who spend too much time at the computer and
. . .oops! Time to do some housework . . .

Bye for now!
