Apparently, on HGTV they frequently arrange books with the spines
towards the back for a 'less cluttered look." I'll reserve comment on
that!

I've never heard of books being shelved with spines facing the back!
But during my undergrad library work, I remember working with some very
big, very heavy reference books that were shelved upside down. We were
instructed to rotate the book spines down towards the table and then
open them. Since they were shelved upside down, they were ready to read
when opened this way. The library reference staff said this method of
storage protected their bindings better than regular, right-side-up
shelving.

One of our English teachers was asking trivia questions to her class,
and I
questioned the answer to her question. She said that in the past,
library
books were shelved with the spine labels facing to the back of the shelf
instead of to the front. Has anyone ever heard of this? If you have, can
you
share the rationale? I must have fallen asleep in library school that
day!

Thanks!
