Apparently, on HGTV they frequently arrange books with the spines towards the back for a 'less cluttered look." I'll reserve comment on that! "The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity." - Ellen Parr Christine Dowding, Librarian Eisenhower High School, Yakima, WA dowding.christine@yakimaschools.org (509) 573-2612 -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of Diane VanGorden Sent: Friday, May 29, 2009 12:49 PM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Re: spine labels I've never heard of books being shelved with spines facing the back! But during my undergrad library work, I remember working with some very big, very heavy reference books that were shelved upside down. We were instructed to rotate the book spines down towards the table and then open them. Since they were shelved upside down, they were ready to read when opened this way. The library reference staff said this method of storage protected their bindings better than regular, right-side-up shelving. ~ VAN Diane Van Gorden, Librarian Baker High School Baker Middle School PO Box 659 Baker, MT 59313-0659 voice 406-778-3329 fax 406-778-2785 email: vangordend @ baker.k12.mt.us books. cats. quilts. life is good! -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of Janet Boltjes Sent: Friday, May 29, 2009 1:00 PM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: spine labels One of our English teachers was asking trivia questions to her class, and I questioned the answer to her question. She said that in the past, library books were shelved with the spine labels facing to the back of the shelf instead of to the front. Has anyone ever heard of this? If you have, can you share the rationale? I must have fallen asleep in library school that day! Thanks!
