Organized in a semi logical order, using the input from the post today. But, it feels weak in places. I would gladly collect input and add to the categories to re-post. Your New Library and You! I. Facilities A. Arrangement i. Learn the layout ii. Rearrange to fit your vision iii. Check the books, are they shelved correctly B. Atmosphere i. Patron friendly, appropriate for the grade levels served ii. Clean, neat and organized iii. Welcoming! Greet your patrons with a SMILE: 1. Say Hello! 2. Make eye contact 3. Initiate the conversation 4. Listen to them 5. Exit with a good-bye C. Displays i. Set up back-to-school displays ii. Get your bulletin board decorated iii. Have a "new" book display area iv. Allow books to be checked out from the display D. Know what you have i. Go through the cabinets and storage areas ii. Clean out the "junk" iii. Sort and deal with the summers accumulation of mail II. People A. Relationships i. Set up a gathering place for the faculty 1. Coffee or beverages 2. Food 3. Work space ii. Be friendly 1. Book talk 2. Make suggestions - but let them choose 3. Ask about them iii. Learn names B. Staff i. Get to know key people 1. Principal 2. Secretaries 3. Custodial staff 4. Faculty/Staff a. Attend subject or grade level meetings b. Be available c. Beginning of the year staff orientation 5. District Teacher-Librarians 6. Public library staff a. Network b. Share curriculum information and even resources ii. Orientation iii. Library staff in your facilities or on other campuses 1. Meet them as early as possible in the year 2. Use their knowledge to learn about facilities and campus 3. Include them in decisions 4. Never blame for failures 5. Establish expectations C. Volunteers i. Adults ii. Student D. Library Council E. You i. Prioritize your time and responsibilities ii. Be friendly iii. As soon as you can start reading from your collection 2. Use automation system to make lists 3. Keep a list of your reading (automation system?) iii. Hot Titles 1. Top ten lists 2. Award titles 3. Public library iv. Curriculum support 1. Map the collection 2. Develop a purchasing plan 3. Ask teachers for input v. Wish lists 1. Easy to add "missing" titles 2. Award books 3. Book reviews 4. Curriculum ties vi. Weeding 1. Generally you want to wait, but if it is smelly and badly damaged weed it 2. Helps learn the collection and match the curriculum 3.
