[LM_NET] Book Review: Unwind

I don't normally write reviews but there have been some questons and
discussion on the book Unwind by Shusterman so I read it over the weekend. I
couldn't put it down! Here goes...

In the spirit of Nancy Farmer's House of the Scorpion, Unwind by Shusterman
is set in a dystopian future. Abortion is illegal though babies may be
'storked,' that is left on a doorstep and it becomes the responsibility of
the finders to rear those babies. Medical technology has advanced to the
point where 99.44% of the human body can be 'recycled' into other bodies.
Medical researchers no longer look for cures for diseases, instead they
replace the parts. Where do they get those replacement parts? From
treenagers! Thirteen to eighteen year olds who have discipline problems, no
families, or those 'tithed' or promised for the purpose are sent to harvest
camps where they are unwound. Ttheir usable body parts are harvested to
implant in other bodies. Unwind orders can be signed by parents, guardians
or ordered by the court system. Find out what happens when Connor, Risa, and
Lev decide they don't want to be unwound, with their parts meted out to live
on in others. The three escape the authorities and run for their lives. This
is a thought provoking look at the question of how life is defined.
