Hi All,

Interesting discussion. In my opinion, the best way to accomplish the goal
of "meeting students where they are" while not crossing the boundaries of
privacy and professionalism is to create a Facebook group for a class, club,
team, etc. You as the administrator can disseminate information, pose
questions, give instructions, etc., and group members can post on the wall
or send individual messages. The reason why groups are so great is because
you don't have to FRIEND people in order for them to be in your group., i.e.
I can form a group, students can join my group, but I will never "friend"
them (and they don't have to "friend" each other), which maintains that
privacy boundary. Another option is to create a "fan page", which again
allows you to give information, ask questions, etc. and they can join
discussions and post on the wall, but they don't even have to join the
group- they just become a "fan" of your page. The fan option is what
businesses and other organizations use on FB because there is no one
person's name associated with it (whereas in a group, the administrator's
name is shown). FB is blocked at my school, but I think it's still something
to consider as an educational tool (especially for review, homework
questions, etc.), since most kids either have Internet access at home or can
get to a public library to use it.

We just did a Survey Monkey survey of all the freshman, and 75% of kids had
some sort of social networking profile, 60% of which were on Facebook. Also,
informally talking to some of our aides clued us into the fact that kids
already use FB to ask each other about homework and work on school things
together. Why not capitalize on the fact that they're already using FB
regularly?

My 2 cents!
