Rachel Kerr's hit mentioned the song, Hi Ho Librario, which was not written by me, but by my dear friend, Jane Scherer, now-retired librarian in the Plainfield, NJ schools. Here's the song, if you want an amazingly easy way to initiate a lesson on books, authors, illustrators, publishers, copyright dates, and then some. Add new verses. Add motions (it's way more fun with motions). It's the title song in an adorable little book of songs I published sometime back, along with a CD. You can still get the book from Follett, though not the CD, I'm afraid. The book is called Hi Ho Librario: Songs, Chants, and Stories to Keep Kids Humming (Rock Hill, 1997). HI HO LIBRARIO (Words by Jane Scherer, ©1980; Tune: "The Farmer in the Dell") The author writes the book, the author writes the book; Hi ho librario, the author writes the book. The illustrator draws, the illustrator draws; Hi ho librario, the illustrator draws. The publisher puts it together, the publisher puts it together; Hi ho librario, the publisher puts it together. The copyright tells us when they made the book, and then, Hi ho librario, let's sing it once again. MOTIONS: The author writes the book (pantomime writing) The illustrator draws (pantomime painting) The publisher puts it together (hold hands out as if you are holding a book, and then slap them closed) The copyright tells us when . . .
