There are some scholarly encyclopedias containing articles that are 
major contributions to their disciplines.  Blindly not allowing 
encyclopedias is not a helpful guideline for research.

BTW  at least two Wikipedia articles have quoted and cited me.  The 
articles are on topics that general encyclopedias would never have 
the room to cover.
